February 07, (THEWILL) –Â Sportswear company, Nike, has severed ties with Manchester United striker, Mason Greenwood, following his arrest and recent release on bail on charges of assault, rape, and death threats.
They had first suspended their partnership with the 20-year-old and committed to “closely monitor the situation,” but have now terminated it entirely.
A Nike official confirmed this saying, “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.”
Greenwood has already been pulled from video games such as FIFA 22, and while he has not been officially suspended by his club, he will neither practice or play in games until further notice, as THEWILL earlier reported.
Shirts with Greenwood’s name and number have been removed from sale on United’s online store and Megastore, and supporters who have previously purchased shirts with his name from the club have been offered the opportunity to exchange those products for another player.
Greenwood, who was detained after girlfriend Harriet Robson shared graphic photographs of various injuries, as well as a distressing audio tape, has not replied to the claims.
THEWILL recalls that on Sunday, January 30, he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault. GMP were eventually granted extra time to question the player, holding him in jail, and arresting him last Tuesday on charges of sexual assault and making threats to kill.
Greenwood was released on bond the next day after being questioned.
United has issued two short comments, the first emphasising that the club “does not condone violence of any kind” and the second emphasising the club’s “strong condemnation of violence of any kind.”
