December 28, (THEWILL) — Christopher Nkunku netted twice in the second half to guide AC Milan to a commanding 3-0 victory over Verona at home. The result pushed Massimiliano Allegri’s team two points clear at the Serie A summit, overtaking Inter before their fixture later on Sunday.
The opening period offered limited attacking threat until Christian Pulisic broke the deadlock shortly before half-time. The forward found space at the far post from a right-sided corner and converted Adrien Rabiot’s flick-on from close range into the roof of the net. Ruben Loftus-Cheek had earlier fired a powerful effort narrowly wide from distance in one of few early opportunities.
Milan maintained their momentum after the interval, with Nkunku earning a penalty less than a minute into the second half following a challenge from Victor Nelsson. The forward sent his spot-kick into the bottom-left corner with composure, doubling the home side’s advantage.
Nkunku completed his brace just two minutes later, reacting quickest to a loose ball yards from goal after goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo had pushed Luka Modric’s strike onto the post. The clinical finish effectively ended the contest and confirmed Milan’s dominant second-half display.
Verona believed they had pulled one back late on when Nigerian forward Gift Orban prodded home from close range, but the goal was ruled out after the striker had fouled Mike Maignan in the build-up. The hosts held on comfortably to claim all three points and move top of the table.
