March 10, (THEWILL)- The German Football Association (DFB) has ruled out an approach to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp about taking over the national team. Managing director Andreas Rettig confirmed there has been “no contact” with Klopp, who is set to leave Liverpool at the end of this season.
Rettig stated the DFB is respecting Klopp’s desire for a break after his tenure at Anfield ends in the summer of 2024. “He has given himself a break. I don’t know whether we should be giving him travel tips on how to enjoy his free time,” Rettig told German magazine Focus.
With current Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s contract running until Euro 2024, hosted in Germany, the DFB had been considering Klopp as a long-term successor. However, Rettig dismissed this, saying: “He wants a break and that’s why it is not an issue.”
The 55-year-old Klopp stunned the football world in January by announcing his Liverpool departure, citing exhaustion after over seven years in charge. He has been linked with several roles, including Germany, but maintains he will take at least a year off.
