SAN FRANCISCO, February 20, (THEWILL) – The Commissioner of Police, Yobe State, Abdulmaliki Sumonu, has declared that no schoolgirl was abducted in the suspected Boko Haram insurgents attack on Government Girls College in Dapchi town.
THEWILL recalls that there were fears that Boko Haram insurgents may have taken scores of schoolgirls from the school when they attacked the town late Monday evening.
The fleeing terrorists took food and beverages from stores in the school and town which is about 100 kilometers from Damaturu, the state capital, as they fired heavily into space with minimal resistance from security forces.
Reports said residents of the town, students and their teachers fled into the bush when the terrorists arrived in about five pick up vans.
Sumonu did confirm the attack but said details remained sketchy.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, Sumonu said no one was killed but added that three males were later abducted by the insurgents in a remote community in Geidam Local Government Area after the attack on Dapchi.
He said so far, there was no report of abduction of any of the girls in the school.
“We are still collecting the details on the attack, census of the girls and the general public,” he said.
THEWILL recalls that the Boko Haram abducted over 200 schoolgirls from a school in Chibok, Borno State in 2014. More than half of the girls have been freed following negotiations between the Nigerian government and the terrorists.
