September 10, (THEWILL) – Sweden’s Vincent Norrman emerged victorious at the 2023 Irish Open after carding a sublime final round of 65 to finish on 14 under par.
The Swede started the day six shots off the lead but produced a blemish-free round featuring six birdies to seal a one-shot victory at The K Club. Overnight leader Hurly Long looked poised to claim the title after moving to 14 under with a birdie at the 12th hole. However, back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14 saw his lead evaporate. Despite an eagle opportunity at the last, Long could only make par to finish one shot behind Norrman.
Pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy saw his hopes fade with a disappointing 74 in the final round. The Northern Irishman made promising starts with birdies at 1 and 4 but found water on 7, 11 and twice on 16 to end his chances. McIlroy finished five shots off the lead in a tie for sixth.
Former champion Shane Lowry carded a solid final round of 68 to join a four-way tie for third on 12 under par. The Irishman made an eagle at the 4th and added four birdies, but it was not enough to overhaul Norrman.
“It means everything,” said Norrman, who claimed his second DP World Tour title in two months. “The fans have been incredible and I really had a fun week out there. I can’t believe this happened.”
