December 02, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has condemned a violent armed robbery targeting El-Kanemi Warriors FC players and officials on Saturday. The incident occurred while the team was returning from their matchday 15 fixture against Ikorodu City.
The team was travelling along the Jos-Bauchi road when armed robbers intercepted their vehicle, causing significant disruption. During the attack, some players sustained injuries, and the robbers stole personal belongings and valuables from the team members.
Elegbeleye confirmed that the NPFL board is actively communicating with the club’s management. He expressed relief that no fatalities were reported during the dangerous encounter and stated the board’s immediate concern for the team’s welfare.
El-Kanemi Warriors, currently positioned joint fourth with Enugu Rangers on the league table with 22 points, are preparing to face Bayelsa United in their upcoming match. The team remains focused despite the traumatic incident that occurred during their recent travel.
The robbery has prompted calls for improved security measures to protect sportsmen, women and their teams during interstate journeys.
