May 22, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) regular season came to a thrilling end on Sunday, May 21, 2023, following the conclusion of matchday 18 fixtures.
The 2022/2023 season, which adopted an abridged format due to previous administrative complications, showcased intense football battles across the nation and set the stage for an exhilarating Championship round.
For teams vying to secure a spot in the playoffs or battling to avoid relegation, the stakes were extraordinarily high as they entered the last matchday. Among the top contenders in Group A was Bendel Insurance, led by Monday Adigie, who emerged as the standout team of the regular season, going undefeated in all 18 matches.
With an impressive record of eight victories and 10 draws, Bendel Insurance topped Group A with 34 points. However, their true test lies ahead as they enter the Super Six playoffs. In Group B, Rivers United clinched the top spot with 34 points, having secured their playoff position prior to the final matchday. Joining them are Lobi Stars, who finished as runners-up in Group B with 30 points, and Sunshine Stars, who snatched the last qualifying spot with a convincing 3-0 victory over Dakkada FC.
These six teams will now face each other in the highly anticipated Super Six Championship set to take place at the iconic Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, from June 3rd to 11th. The team that emerges with the highest points at the end of the skirmishes will be crowned the NPFL Champions of the 2022/2023 season.
