August 15, (THEWILL) – The start of the new Nigeria Premier League (NPFL) season has been postponed by two weeks, the league’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) announced on Tuesday.
The 2023/2024 NPL campaign was originally scheduled to begin on August 26, but will now kick off on September 9. According to the IMC, the main reason for the delayed start is to allow for adequate preparations for a full season, rather than the abridged format used last term. The committee had initially proposed repeating the abbreviated structure before club owners overturned the plan.
The IMC also cited the need to fully test and employ the newly launched NPL live app across selected stadia. The app was just commissioned last week. Additionally, the impending CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup commitments of Nigeria’s four representatives created a conflict with the initial NPL start date.
The teams begin CAF preliminary stage ties this weekend. The IMC will conduct the league draw on Thursday in Lagos ahead of the new September 9 start date for the domestic competition where Enyimba International will strive to defend their title from last season.
