December 03, (THEWILL) – On Friday, Team Delta demonstrated that it was unwilling to give up its top spot in the ongoing National Sports Festival by winning one more gold.
This added to the four it had already won in the cycling competition, bringing its total to five out of the seven events it has competed in so far.
The Delta State athletes took home gold medals in both the men’s and female 1 km time trials. In the men’s competition, Bayelsa won silver, Edo finished third with bronze, and Oyo won both silver and bronze in the female competition.
In the 500m female sprint, Tawakalt Yekeen, took home the bronze medal, Deborah Alase of Rivers State, won the silver, and Delta’s top cyclist, Ukpeseraye, took home the gold.
In the men’s 500m sprint, Isah Momohy defeated Lagos’ Quawan Tijani and Delta’s Emmanuel Gabriel Addo, to win Edo’s first cycling gold. Quawan Tijani and Emmanuel Gabriel Addo won silver and bronze, respectively.
One of the athletes at the fiesta is Fatima Sahidu, who is at the games to compete for the medals in the female taekwondo events even though she is a nursing mother and is in Asaba with her 5-month-old son, Abubakar Sahidu. Yet, she believes that cannot stand in her way of fulfilling her dream of winning a gold medal at Delta 2022.
