June 14, (THEWILL) -Darwin Nunez has arrived at the AXA Training Centre in Liverpool for a physical, ahead of his high-profile transfer to Anfield.
Nunez had a fantastic season with Benfica in 2012/13, scoring 26 goals in 28 games in the Primeira Liga and leading the team to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. These performances drew a lot of attention from all around Europe, and Liverpool finally have won the battle to recruit him.
Benfica said on Monday that a deal for up to €100 million had been reached with Liverpool for Nunez, making him the club’s most expensive acquisition to date. The striker has now arrived at the club’s Kirkby training ground for a medical examination to be followed by confirmation possibly by the end of the day.
Manchester United were also interested in signing Nunez, but when it became evident that Sadio Mane wanted to leave the club, Liverpool moved rapidly to finalise the deal. Mane has previously been the subject of two bids from Bayern Munich, both of which fell far short of Liverpool’s asking price.
