May 18, (THEWILL) – Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ofili, made history on Saturday, setting a new world record in the women’s 150 metres with a time of 15.85 seconds at the Adidas Atlanta City Games. This achievement comes less than a year after administrative errors prevented her from competing in the 100 metres at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Ofili’s Olympic journey was derailed when the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) failed to submit her name for the 100m event despite her qualification. Following the incident, Ofili shared her frustration on social media: “I have worked 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what?”
A subsequent inquiry recommended she receive N8 million in compensation for the disappointment and emotional distress caused by the administrative oversight. The incident was part of a broader disappointment for Nigeria at the Paris Olympics, where the country’s 88 athletes across 12 sports failed to secure any medals.
Ofili’s record-breaking performance tells of what might have been possible at the Olympics if she had not been omitted and had the opportunity of flying the country’s flag in Paris. It also underscores the need for improved administrative procedures within Nigeria’s sports organisations.
