June 12, (THEWILL) – On Day 4 of the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius, Sade Olatoye won the Women’s Hammer throw to give Team Nigeria the gold medal.
Olatoye came from behind to defeat close competitor, Algeria’s Zouina Bouzebra, in the contest for the top podium. Bouzebra had a comfortable lead after her first two throws of 59.86m and 59.66m, which were both better than Olatoye’s 57.78m and 57.98m.
That was when Olatoye went for the win with a throw of 63.67m on her third attempt, ensuring that Bouzebra had to settle for silver with her final throw of 63.48m. Rawan Barakat of Egypt won bronze with her 62.67m throw.
Olatoye’s goal medal was enough to keep Nigeria in joint third place on the medals table (tied with Algeria) with a total of seven medals: four gold, two silver, and one bronze.
South Africa leads the medals table with six gold, nine silver, and ten bronze medals, while Kenya is second with five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.
