September 07, (THEWILL) — Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has accepted a season-long loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. The Cameroon international initially showed reluctance to leave Old Trafford but ultimately agreed to the proposal after being pushed down the pecking order following Senne Lammens’ arrival.
The loan arrangement does not include an option for Trabzonspor to make the transfer permanent next summer. United accepted the Turkish club’s bid after Onana found himself facing the prospect of third-choice status under manager Ruben Amorim, with Altay Bayındır having started the opening three matches of the campaign ahead of him.
Trabzonspor are working to complete the deal before their transfer window closes on September 12, hoping to integrate Onana into their starting lineup immediately. The 29-year-old goalkeeper is now preparing to travel to Turkey to finalise the temporary switch.
The loan spell will allow Onana to maintain match fitness whilst potentially attracting interest from other clubs ahead of a possible permanent departure from United next summer. Should Trabzonspor wish to retain his services beyond the loan period, they would need to negotiate a separate agreement with the English Premier League club.
Onana’s contract at Old Trafford runs for three more years and includes a 12-month extension clause. The temporary move is a significant shift for the keeper, who had previously been determined to fight for his place at the Theatre of Dreams before circumstances forced a reassessment of his immediate future.
