September 21, (THEWILL) – Goalkeeper Andre Onana took full responsibility for his error, after Manchester United lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich in their opening game of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper admitted his first-half blunder, when he let Leroy Sane’s tame shot slip through his fingers, was the turning point, as United went down to their third straight loss in all competitions and fourth in six matches. Onana admitted that it was one of his “worst games” and that the team lost control after his mistake gifted Bayern the lead.
Onana acknowledged he has “a lot to prove” following his difficult start at Old Trafford. United had started brightly, with Christian Eriksen going close early on. However, Serge Gnabry doubled Bayern’s advantage minutes after Onana’s error, finding space easily in the United area.
Manager Erik ten Hag remarked that his charges must quickly bounce back from their mistakes. Although they threatened a comeback in the second half, with goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro, Bayern still triumphed. The result means United have conceded three or more goals in three straight games for the first time since 1978.
Ten Hag admitted the club is going through a difficult period but said they can turn things around. Onana’s admission of responsibility and poor performance compounds a miserable European campaign kickoff for United. The Red Devils will hope to get back to winning ways in their Saturday EPL clash with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.
