Genk
Onuachu

January 23, (THEWILL) – Belgian top side Royal Union St Gilloise beat Genk 2-1 in the Jupiler League on Sunday evening thanks to a 98th-minute penalty, in Paul Onuachu’s return to action.

Casper Nielsen’s first-half goal had placed Teddy Teuma’s team ahead, but RUSG were closing in on a draw after Super Eagles’ striker Onuachu equalised from the penalty spot for Genk.

RUSG thought they had snatched the winner when Dante Vanzeir slotted home from point-blank range in the 94th minute. However, his goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.

The drama did not end there, as RUSG were granted a penalty, which Vanzeir converted past Genk’s goalkeeper with no time remaining for Genk to react.

It was Onuachu’s first game for Genk this year as he marked his return from an injury that kept him away from selection for Nigeria for the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. His last game was a December19, 2021 1-1 home draw against Royal Antwerp, where he scored the only goal for Genk.

With 53 points, RUSG is in first place in the league, nine points ahead of heavyweights Club Brugge, whom they will face in the showcase match next Thursday.
