October 26, (THEWILL) – After going nine matches without finding the back of the net, Nigerian striker, Gift Orban, rediscovered his scoring touch on Thursday night during Gent’s 5-0 thrashing of Breidablik in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Orban, who earned a Super Eagles call-up earlier this year, slotted home in the 69th minute to wrap up the scoring for Gent against their Icelandic opponents. His goal marked the first time the 21-year-old had scored since August 20, ending a drought that lasted 578 minutes across all competitions.
The young striker had struggled to replicate his early season form, which saw him net 6 goals in his first 11 appearances. His mysterious goalless run had seen him dropped from the Super Eagles squad for their October internationals and no longer a guaranteed starter for Gent.
However, Orban’s emphatic finish on Thursday will come as a relief and confidence boost. His strike takes his tally to 7 goals from 16 games this campaign, including 5 in the continental competition.
Gent remain undefeated and top of their Europa Conference League Group B standings with seven points from their opening three matches. The other scorers in their 5-0 rout of Breidablik were Omri Gandelman, a brace from Hugo Cuypers and Tarik Tissoudali.
