January 03, (THEWILL) – Nigerian forward Gift Orban has officially transferred from Olympique Lyonnais to TSG Hoffenheim.
The deal, which was finalised on January 2 sees Orban join the German Bundesliga side for a fee of €9 million, with potential add-ons reaching up to €3 million.
This transfer marks a new chapter for the 22-year-old forward, who has signed a contract valid until June 2029.
Orban’s transfer comes after a challenging period at Lyon, where he struggled to secure a regular starting position since his move from KAA Gent in January 2024.
Despite high expectations following his prolific scoring form in Belgium, Orban managed only five goals in 21 appearances for Lyon.
His departure from the French club was facilitated by Lyon’s need to manage their squad due to financial constraints and performance issues, which have seen them facing relegation risks.
Hoffenheim, currently positioned 15th in the Bundesliga, are aiming to bolster their attack with Orban’s addition.
The team has scored only 20 goals in 15 league matches this season, highlighting a clear need for offensive reinforcement. Orban’s arrival is seen as a strategic move to improve their goal-scoring capabilities and avoid the relegation battle.
