November 08, (THEWILL) – The company behind the failed European Super League, A22 Sports Management, is set to meet with UEFA on Tuesday.
As THEWILL reported, in April 2021, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Juventus, Inter, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid proposed the launch of a secretive rival competition to UEFA’s Champions League. However, most of them apologised and backed out as a result of widespread anger from fans and overwhelming backlash.
But, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus continue to support the failed proposal because they believe that UEFA’s European football governance needs to be challenged and are involved in litigation with the continental football body on the subject.
On Tuesday, Bernd Reichart, the recently appointed A22 chief executive, is meeting with UEFA after he requested new discussions about the future of football in a letter he sent to UEFA last month. Speaking after his appointment, Reichart pointed to the possibility of a Super League in the 2024/25 season.
He said: “That might be the first reasonable and realistic call but there are so many variables that I can’t actually foresee. That is probably the first realistic call. We want to see whether or not there is broader consensus about the problems facing European football. The game we all love will benefit from honest and open dialogue, free of constraints, about a brighter future through serious reform.”
