February 10, (THEWILL) – In Barcelona Femeni’s 9-1 hammering of Real Sociedad on Wednesday, Super Falcons’ skipper, Asisat Oshoala, made history by joining the club’s centurion class with her 100th game for the Catalan side.
THEWILL recalls that Oshoala joined Barcelona on loan from Dalian Quanjian in January 2019 before signing a permanent deal six months later. Since then, the Nigerian captain has been a crucial player and one of the best teams in women’s club football.
The encounter against Real Sociedad on Wednesday was another example of Oshoala’s importance in the Jonatan Giráldez squad.
Oshoala put Barcelona up in the 10th minute before doubling Barcelona’s advantage just before halftime as Barca’s ladies hammered their hosts 9-1.
The 27-year-old Nigerian increased her goal tally to 18 in 15 league games this season as she remains on track to surpass her best-scoring season, which came in the 2019-2020 season. That season, the former Arsenal star scored 21 goals across all competitions, 20 of which came in the Spanish Primera division.
With nine games left in the Spanish top division this season, the ex-Liverpool star is on track to break her club record for goals scored. In her 100 outings for Barcelona, Oshoala has scored 79 goals.
Meanwhile, her brace in the first half against Sociedad set the tone for the second half, with Barcelona scoring seven more goals. La Primera Ibedrola champions made it three with goals from Fridolina Rolfö and Irene Paredes, before Irene Paredes and Lieke Martens extended the away side’s lead.
Alexia Puttelas, the Best Women’s Player, added the sixth goal, and late goals from Claudia Pina, Jennifer Hermoso, and Marta Torejjon rounded out a strong performance by the champs.
The only blemish on an otherwise immaculate performance is the lack of a clean sheet after Sociedad’s consolation goal was netted by Emma Ramirez. Nonetheless, the victory almost ensures Barcelona’s second consecutive league triumph after another flawless campaign.
