March 13, (THEWILL) – In front of a raucous crowd at Estadi Johan Cruyff, Barcelona Femeni were crowned Primera Iberdrola champions on Sunday, after roundly beating the Real Madrid Women’s team.
The 5-0 triumph over Real ensures that Barca cannot be surpassed in points in the 2021/2022 season, even with six games remaining. This is nothing but a testament to their incredible run of 24 wins in 24 games, so far.
This is the Catalan club’s third La Liga title in a row, but the seventh overall after victories in 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2019/2020, 2020/2021, and now this season. Barca presently have a two-title advantage over Athletic Club in the league title standings.
With this win, Barca also confirm their domination in Spain, having won the most titles, the most Copa de la Reina victories, and the most Spanish Super Cup victories and after the heroics of Asisat Oshoala and her teammates last season, they are also the only team from Spain to win the Champions League too.
Appropriately enough, this was only the second time the title was won in front of home fans, with the first occasion being exactly ten years previously.
Although Oshoala’s injury kept her out of the most recent games, the Nigerian forward still remained at the top of the goal-scoring chart in Barca, as other players take the chance of her absence to catch up in the free-scoring Barcelona squad. Her displays for the club ensured that work was expedited to extend her contract.
The contract of the four-time African footballer of the year, which was set to expire at the end of this season, has now been extended until June 30, 2024, with the signing taking place at the president’s office at Camp Nou, and was observed by president Joan Laporta and director Xavier Puig.
The 27-year-old Nigerian arrived Barça on January 31, 2019, and has already proven her goal-scoring prowess. She has 80 goals in 101 competitive games, putting her in sixth place all-time in goals scored for the squad.
In the 2019 Champions League final in Budapest, she scored her first Barca goal (2019). She currently leads the Primera Iberdrola league in goals scored with 16 in 19 games.
