June 08, (THEWILL) – The sensational Victor Osimhen has emerged as a nominee in the international category for the prestigious Best African Player award of the Ghana Football Awards, as announced via their official Twitter account.
Osimhen’s outstanding performances have earned him this recognition, joining the ranks of other exceptional players such as Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez. The stellar season that the 24-year-old Nigerian had saw him score an impressive 26 goals in just 32 appearances, playing a pivotal role in securing Napoli’s Scudetto triumph, a remarkable feat accomplished after a 33-year hiatus.
Additionally, Osimhen showcased his skills on the European stage, finding the back of the net five times in the UEFA Champions League. Indeed, Napoli faltered in the race to a UCL title because he was recovering from a knock. Osimhen’s remarkable achievements were further acknowledged as he clinched the coveted top scorer award and was crowned the league’s best striker.
While Osimhen’s nomination highlights his exceptional contributions to the sport, he faces tough competition from his fellow African counterparts. Salah, a prominent figure in both Liverpool and the Egyptian national team, had an impressive season, amassing 30 goals and providing 16 assists across 51 games. Mahrez, the talented Algerian winger for Manchester City, displayed his prowess with 15 goals and 13 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.
The Best African Player award of the Ghana Football Awards promises to be a fiercely contested battle among these football luminaries.
