August 28, (THEWILL) – Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has been awarded the Paolo Rossi prize for finishing as the top goalscorer in Serie A last season.
The 24-year-old Nigerian scored an impressive 26 goals in 32 league appearances to help fire Napoli to their first Scudetto in over three decades. The award is named after the legendary Italy striker, Paolo Rossi, who was the top scorer at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, which was won by Italy.
Osimhen’s prolific goal-scoring last term made him the highest-scoring African in a single Serie A season, surpassing the previous record set by Samuel Eto’o during his time with Inter Milan. His outstanding performances were pivotal to Napoli’s memorable title success under former manager Luciano Spalletti.
Despite missing a number of games through injury and suspension, Osimhen was ruthlessly prolific in front of goal last term. His pace, power and clinical finishing proved too hot for defences across Italy to handle.
Osimhen has carried his sensational form into the new campaign, already notching three goals in Napoli’s opening two matches. The Partenopei will be hoping their talismanic centre-forward can fire them to further glory this season.
