July 29, (THEWILL) – The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into threats made against the Israeli Olympic delegation. French Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, reported that threatening emails were sent to three Israeli athletes.
Paris is currently hosting the 2024 Olympic Games and implementing extensive security measures has become imperative. Approximately 18,000 military personnel have been deployed alongside additional police forces to protect Olympic venues, the Olympic Village and major tourist areas until the Games end on August 11.
Cybersecurity efforts are also underway, with the police cybercrime unit working to remove published personal data of Israeli athletes from social networks. This data includes blood test results, login details, and military status information. However, no connection has been established between these data leaks and the threatening emails.
France has implemented special arrangements to protect the Israeli delegation due to the ongoing situation in Gaza. The conflict has sparked global reactions, which have been reflected at the Olympic Games. During the opening ceremony, Palestinian flag-bearer Waseem Abu Sal wore a T-shirt depicting children bombed in his country, while Iraq’s request to prevent Israel’s flag from being flown alongside its own was rejected.
The investigation aims to determine the source of the threats and any potential links to the recent data leaks. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of all participants in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
