Real Madrid's President Florentino Perez
November 22, (THEWILL) – Florentino Perez, president of La Liga giants, Real Madrid, has sent a letter wishing Barcelona midfielder, Gavi, well after the young star suffered a serious knee injury during Spain’s 3-1 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Georgia.
The 19-year old Gavi had to be substituted early in the match on Sunday after twisting his knee awkwardly. Subsequent medical evaluations confirmed Gavi tore the ACL in his right knee, as well as damaging his meniscus. The injuries are expected to rule Gavi out for the remainder of the 2023/2024 season.
Perez’s letter comes after Real Madrid players, Dani Carvajal and Joselu, posted messages of support for Gavi on social media. Carvajal called Gavi “club rivals and international teammates, but above all, people,” while Joselu told him “You are going to come through this with bravery and courage.”
Gavi had been ever-present for Barcelona this season, starting 17 of 18 games across all competitions. His loss leaves Barcelona manager Xavi with a gap to fill in midfield as the club tries to chase down La Liga leaders Girona and second place Real Madrid.
Potential replacements mentioned include former Barcelona academy product Thiago Alcantara and Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso. Yet, regardless of who features in his absence, Gavi’s injury will have a significant impact on the Catalan club.
