January 20, (THEWILL) – Amaju Pinnick, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has cleared the air regarding the remuneration structure of the current leadership of Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles especially in its caretaker basis.
This became necessary as Augustine Eguavoen, who until his appointment as interim coach of the national team to prosecute Nigeria’s participation at the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations was a Technical Director at the Federation, was still on the payroll of the NFF.
Pinnick explained that the structure took care of that reality while clearing the air on why Eguavoen will not be given a salary for his contribution at the ongoing AFCON 2021.
Due to his interim role with the Super Eagles, Eguavoen would only be eligible for match bonuses as Nigeria advanced in the continental tournament, according to the NFF President.
THEWILL recalls that the NFF fired Gernot Rohr in December, and Eguavoen was appointed on a temporary basis in Rohr’s stead. But, just before the AFCON kicked off, the NFF announced the appointment of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro as substantive handler of the Super Eagles, whose tenure will begin after AFCON.
Therefore, the 56-year-old Eguavoen will transfer authority over the team to Peseiro, who is expected to see that Nigeria qualifies for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup through the CAF-organised playoffs.
Speaking about the pay arrangement, Pinnick explained: “Eguavoen is on the payroll of the NFF and he won’t be entitled to salary for the role he is playing as an interim coach of the team.
“He will be entitled to the winning bonuses as the team progresses at the tournament [2021 AFCON].”
