January 06, (THEWILL) – Liverpool have finalised an agreement with Brazilian club Fluminense for goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga, marking the end of his four-year stint at the Merseyside club. The transfer remains subject to a medical.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, who joined Liverpool in January 2021 for £2m from Fluminense, developed through the club’s youth system, participating in Under-18 English Premier League and Premier League 2 competitions. His progression led to inclusion in several first-team matchday squads in previous seasons.
The 22-year-old’s time in England included loan spells at different levels of football. He gained initial senior experience at Macclesfield FC in the seventh tier, followed by temporary moves to St Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland and Livingston in Scotland, though playing opportunities proved limited.
Liverpool’s official statement read: “Everyone at LFC wishes Marcelo the best of luck for the future.” The transfer represents a return to Pitaluga’s original club, where his professional career began before moving to England.
The Anfield club maintains substantial depth in the goalkeeping position. First-choice Alisson Becker continues his role, supported by Caoimhin Kelleher, while recent Euro 2024 participant Giorgi Mamardashvili strengthens the squad following his arrival from Valencia. Additionally, Vitezslav Jaros has contributed during the current campaign.
