January 24, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three men following a violent masquerade display in Etinan Local Government Area, signaling a firm crackdown on individuals using cultural celebrations as a cover for lawlessness.
The intervention followed a distress call at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026, reporting that masquerades in Mbioto II Village had turned violent, disrupting public order and harassing residents.
Police operatives deployed to the scene arrested two masquerades and their suspected leader.
The suspects, identified as Kenneth Bassey (31), Ofonime Isaac (25), and Paul Samuel Bassey (21), are currently in custody. Investigators are working to determine the full extent of the disorderly conduct and any potential injuries to community members.
Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammad Azare, while confirming the arrests, warned that the state’s respect for tradition does not grant immunity for criminal behavior.
“The Police respect cultural expressions, but any activity that breaches public peace or instills fear in citizens will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law,” he stated.
CP Azare emphasized that while masquerade festivals are an integral part of the state’s rich heritage, they must not degenerate into tools for intimidation or threats to public safety.
He commended the prompt response of the officers involved and assured the public that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property.
Residents of Etinan and surrounding communities have been urged to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities.
Security experts have recently raised concerns over the radicalization of traditional groups, noting that without strict enforcement, such cultural displays risk being hijacked by hoodlums to settle local scores.
