September 13, (THEWILL) – The German national football team earned a much-needed 2-1 victory over France in an international friendly match on Tuesday.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Germany, who sacked manager, Hansi Flick, on Sunday, following a poor run of form. Thomas Mueller and Leroy Sane scored goals at the start and end of the match to give Germany their first win in six matches. While France did not field their strongest side, with Kylian Mbappe on the bench, Germany’s overall performance was a marked improvement from their 4-1 home loss to Japan last Saturday that led to Flick’s dismissal.
Germany entered the match having won just four of their previous 17 matches. They were eager to generate excitement among home fans ahead of hosting Euro 2024 next year and restore their reputation as a footballing bastion.
France grew increasingly dangerous as the match wore on, with chances from Randal Kolo Muani and Aurelien Tchouameni. Germany goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen had to make some key saves to preserve the lead before Sane sealed the win late on. Antoine Griezmann pulled a goal back for France from the penalty spot but it was too little too late.
“It was a relief for all of us. It just feels good especially after the recent defeats,” said Voeller, Germany’s interim manager. The much-needed result will provide a confidence boost following a difficult period.
