September 02, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur have completed a club-record transfer for Wales international, Brennan Johnson, from Nottingham Forest.
The versatile 22-year-old forward signed a six-year contract after Spurs agreed a deal worth £47.5 million with Forest. Johnson emerged as head coach Ange Postecoglou’s top target after star striker Harry Kane departed for Bayern Munich last month. The highly-rated Johnson scored 29 goals in 108 appearances for his boyhood club Forest, helping them earn promotion to the English Premier League.
Forest had previously rejected bids from Brentford for Johnson, who can operate anywhere across the front three. But the sale helps Forest satisfy their Financial Fair Play requirements as it applies to the top flight of England football.
Postecoglou said Johnson’s arrival concludes a busy summer of transfers for Tottenham as they look to rebuild under his management. Spurs moved for Johnson late on deadline day after proposed deals for Conor Gallagher and Lloyd Kelly fell through.
The Australian revealed Spurs are close to appointing a new sporting director after Fabio Paratici’s resignation in April. Postecoglou said he is comfortable working with a director but has control over the playing style and transfers.
