December 07, (THEWILL) – The French Ligue 1’s governing body announced on Wednesday, that Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, has been suspended for the club’s next two league matches over a high challenge during Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Le Havre.
The suspension means the Italian goalkeeper will miss league contests against Nantes and Lille over the coming weekends. The sanction comes after Donnarumma received a red card in the 10th minute of the Le Havre match.
Replays showed his mistimed, high-footed attempt to clear the ball and made contact with opponent Josue Casimir’s head. Match officials deemed it a dangerous challenge warranting sending off.
Donnarumma’s absence deals a blow to the defending Ligue 1 champions’ ambitions as they try to respond after disappointing UEFA Champions League and domestic cup eliminations last season. However, the 24-year-old shot-stopper remains eligible for PSG’s upcoming UCL Group F tie at Borussia Dortmund next Wednesday.
