December 18, (THEWILL) – Ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup final, as uncertainty surrounds Lionel Messi’s future at the club level, Paris Saint-Germain president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has asserted that any decision about a new contract would be taken “in the best interests of both parties.”
THEWILL recalls that Messi made a shocking switch to the French giants after his contract with Barcelona expired last year. Once again, the captain of Argentina will be a free agent at the end of this season. While in Qatar, rumours emerged that he had an agreement with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer, but his agent disputed those claims.
Speaking in advance of Sunday’s World Cup final between France and Argentina, Al-Khelaifi emphasised that no contract negotiations will start until the new year.
The club President said: “The club and player will do what is right and in the best interests of both parties. We’re all very happy right now.”
For PSG this year, Messi has scored and assisted for a total goal contribution of 26 goals. In the top five leagues in Europe, only teammate, Neymar and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland have matched that total, demonstrating an uptick in performance as he appears to have settled in Paris.
