August 01, (THEWILL) — Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is set to stand trial over rape allegations dating back to February 2023.
The Nanterre public prosecutor’s office has formally requested that the 26-year-old Moroccan international be charged before a criminal court. The case stems from an incident in which a 24-year-old woman accused Hakimi of sexual assault at his home after the pair connected on Instagram.
The complainant alleged that Hakimi kissed and touched her without consent before raping her, as detailed in her police statement.
She reported the incident the same day but initially declined to file a formal complaint.
Hakimi was later charged with rape on 3 March 2023 and placed under judicial supervision. A confrontation between the parties in December 2023 saw the woman reiterate her claims, while Hakimi maintained his innocence.
Hakimi’s legal team has dismissed the allegations as a potential extortion attempt, citing inconsistencies in the accuser’s account.
His lawyer, Fanny Colin, described the prosecutor’s indictment as “incomprehensible and senseless,” pointing to psychological evaluations that allegedly undermine the complainant’s credibility. Colin confirmed Hakimi’s intention to appeal if the case proceeds to trial.
Despite the legal proceedings, Hakimi has continued to play for PSG and remains a key figure for both club and country.
The Parisian club has publicly supported the player since the investigation began, emphasising the presumption of innocence. Hakimi’s form on the pitch has remained unaffected, with his performances keeping him in contention for individual accolades.
The trial, if confirmed, will mark a significant development in a case that has lingered for over two years. Legal experts suggest the proceedings could extend well into 2026, given potential appeals.
