August 26, (THEWILL) – For the second year in a row, Barcelona midfielder, Alexia Putellas, was named the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year for the 2021/2022 campaign, becoming the first recipient of the honour in back-to-back years in the history of the women’s awards.
Lena Oberdorf of Germany and Wolfsburg and winger, Beth Mead of England and Arsenal, were also nominated. In the 2021/22 season, Putellas scored 34 goals, finishing her career’s most productive season as Barcelona continued to rule the domestic scene.
Following Vicky Losada’s departure, the 28-year-old was awarded the captain’s armband for Barcelona ahead of the 2021/2022 season, and she guided her team to a domestic double. Barcelona won 30 out of 30 games last season to claim the Primera Division for a third consecutive time. They also won the Copa de la Reina, defeating Sporting Huelva 6-1 in the championship match, with Putellas scoring twice.
Even though her team made it to the Champions League final, they were defeated 3-1 by Lyon, with Putellas scoring what would ultimately only be a consolation goal. Still, Putellas ended up with the most goals in the Champions League with 11.
The midfielder’s sad ACL rupture on the eve of the competition prevented her from participating in Euro 2022. Putellas is only the second player in the history of the women’s awards to win the title a second time, trailing only Pernille Harder.
