November 19, (THEWILL) – While Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are accustomed to contesting against each other on the football field, they have been pitted against one another in a game of chess in a recent Louis Vuitton ad campaign.
Ahead of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup opening on Sunday, the French luxury house’s most recent advertising campaign, with the slogan “Victory Is a State of Mind”, was released on Saturday, with photographs from Annie Leibovitz.
It borrows from LV’s 2010 Core Values campaign, which featured Zinedine Zidane, Pele, and Maradona playing table football. In the ad, Messi and Ronaldo are pictured fixating intensely on chess pieces that have been placed on a Louis Vuitton Damier attaché case’s checkerboard canvas.
Having arguably two of the world’s greatest-ever players in their ad is significant enough but it is even more so as it comes just a few days after Ronaldo gushed about Messi to Piers Morgan in his now-viral television interview, with the Portuguese football legend lavishly praising Messi as possibly the only player in history to be better than him.
With a history of producing trophy cases for sports like tennis, basketball, rugby, and Formula 1, Vuitton has partnered with FIFA, the world’s governing body of soccer, since 2010. In addition to creating the World Cup trophy’s travel case, it also unveiled a small line of leather products with a soccer theme.
