June 22, (THEWILL) – Bayer Leverkusen are close to completing a deal for Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, with negotiations advancing towards a transfer fee in the region of £30 million plus performance-related add-ons.
Talks between both clubs have included the possibility of a buyback clause, although final terms are still under discussion.
The 22-year-old is currently with England’s Under-21 squad at the European Championship in Slovakia, and a move is unlikely to be finalised before the national team conclude their campaign.
Quansah, a product of Liverpool’s Academy, broke into the senior team during the 2023/2024 season following his debut in August 2023.
He has since featured 55 times for the English Premier League champions, contributing three goals and three assists.
Despite showing early promise, his involvement declined significantly last season, prompting discussions about seeking regular football elsewhere.
The defender previously gained experience on loan at Bristol Rovers during the 2022/2023 campaign.
The England Under-21 international has been open about his desire to take the next step in his career.
Speaking during the tournament, he said: “I think I can take massive learnings from the three seasons I have had in professional football. From Bristol Rovers until now, to put perspective and look back, I am in a very good position to take the next step.”
His performances in Slovakia have reinforced interest from Leverkusen, who are aiming to strengthen their back line before the 2025/2026 campaign.
Leverkusen’s need for defensive reinforcements has grown following the departure of Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich and the expected permanent exit of Odilon Kossounou to Atalanta.
The former Bundesliga champions are also planning for a busy UEFA Champions League campaign and view Quansah as a long-term investment. Leverkusen have already done business with Liverpool this summer, with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong both heading to Anfield in separate deals.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are evaluating options to fill the potential gap in central defence. With Ibrahima Konaté still negotiating a contract extension and Virgil van Dijk only recently renewing his deal, the Merseyside club remains active in the market.
Quansah’s departure, if completed, would mark another significant move in a transfer window that has already involved key defensive changes on both sides of the transaction.
