August 19, (THEWILL) — Olympique de Marseille have formally placed midfielders, Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe, on the transfer list following a physical altercation between the pair. The incident occurred in the dressing room after Friday’s 1-0 Ligue 1 defeat to Rennes. The club’s statement confirmed the decision was taken due to “unacceptable behaviour” and is in accordance with its internal code of conduct.
The altercation reportedly stemmed from Rabiot accusing Rowe of insufficient effort during the match at Roazhon Park. Despite Rennes playing with 10 men for over an hour following Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal’s first-half red card, Marseille failed to capitalise. Ludovic Blas subsequently scored a winning goal for the hosts in the 91st minute, compounding a disappointing start to the season for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
Rabiot, whose contract was a significant summer acquisition, now faces an abrupt departure. The French international was a pivotal figure last season, contributing nine goals and four assists in 29 league appearances. His performances have already prompted speculation of a return to former club Juventus, with the transfer window set to close on September 1.
English winger Jonathan Rowe, who joined last year, is also compelled to seek a new club. Despite being used primarily as a substitute, making only six starts, he managed three goals and three assists in Ligue 1. His situation has attracted attention from England, with newly promoted English Premier League sides Sunderland and Leeds United reportedly monitoring his availability.
Marseille’s immediate focus shifts to on-pitch matters, with the squad preparing to host Paris FC this Saturday. The club will then visit Lyon the following week. The exclusion of two senior players represents a significant disruption for manager Roberto De Zerbi as he attempts to improve results following the opening day defeat.
