April 23, (THEWILL) – A torrential rainstorm has blown off the roof of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) office in Makurdi, Benue State, leaving staff stranded and the facility in disarray.
When our correspondent visited the office located along Jonah Jang Crescent, behind the Rain Oil filling station, staff were seen scooping water out of the building following the downpour.
The Nation’s correspondent, Uja Emmanuel, who also visited during the storm, said his shoes were soaked in water while attempting to access the office to meet with the head of the station.
Reacting to the development, a NAN staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said parts of the ceiling and other office materials were damaged in the incident.
According to him, a section of the perimeter fence also collapsed. While no official documents were destroyed, several chairs were drenched in water.
The agency is calling on both the government and well-meaning individuals to come to its aid so it can continue to serve the state effectively.
Further checks revealed that the rainstorm also brought down several electric poles, plunging parts of Makurdi into darkness.
As of the time of filing this report, officials of the Benue State Environmental Sanitation Agency were seen clearing debris from streets and gutters across Makurdi metropolis.
