February 01, (THEWILL) – Rangers have signed Aaron Ramsey on a season-long loan deal from Juventus.
The Glasgow-based side, who are presently in first place in the Scottish Premiership, are said to have an option to buy the former Arsenal midfielder at the end of the 2021/2022 season.
Ramsey has been looking for a new club after falling out of favour at Juventus under Massimiliano Allegri, making only five appearances in all competitions during an injury-plagued season.
Ramsey joined Juventus in 2019 and has since won Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the Italian Super Cup, but he is now moving to the Scottish Premiership in order to obtain more playing time.
Talking about the move, Ramsey said: “I am really pleased to be joining a club like Rangers, where there is so much to look forward to between now and May.
“I had a number of offers on the table, but none matched the magnitude of this club, with European football and the chance to play in front of 50,000 fans every other week.
“I have had some fantastic conversations with the manager and Ross Wilson, and I’m really looking forward to working with both of them, and to meeting the supporters.”
With a weekly salary of £400,000, the 31-year-old joined Juve from Arsenal, becoming the highest-paid British player.
On Wednesday evening, the Wales international could make his Rangers debut against bitter rivals Celtic. Rangers have made three signings in the January window. Last week, Amad Diallo arrived on loan from Manchester United, while James Sands came on an 18-month loan from Major League Soccer’s New York City FC.
Ramsey’s time at Arsenal is his most well-known accomplishment. He joined Arsenal in 2008 and made 369 appearances for the north London club, helping them win three FA Cups.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the Rangers’ manager, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to add a player of Aaron’s quality, experience and leadership to our squad.
“As soon as it was mooted as a possibility, I was really keen for us to try everything to get the deal done, and huge credit must go to Ross [sporting director Ross Wilson] and to the board for the work they have put in on this. I look forward to welcoming Aaron to the training centre tomorrow.”
