November 02, (THEWILL) – A 3-1 loss to Ajax in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match, meant that Rangers set an unenviable regrettable record by becoming the first Scottish team to lose all six of its UCL group stage games.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team had little chance of qualifying for the Europa League going into their last Group A encounter, and any sliver of optimism was crushed at the Ibrox when they fell behind 2-0 after only 29 minutes.
In the fourth minute, Steven Berghuis gave the visitors the lead, and Mohammed Kudus doubled Ajax’s advantage. After the break, Kudus scored again, but VAR disallowed the goal because of offside.
James Tavernier, the captain of Rangers, scored a late consolation goal from the penalty spot, but Francisco Conceicao completed the scoring for Ajax, making sure that they finished third and will try to advance to the final 16 of the Europa League in the coming months.
Rangers dropped out having only managed to score just twice while conceding 22 goals in their six group games. Van Bronckhorst’s team joins the 1959/1960 Rangers squad as the only Scottish teams to have allowed more than 20 goals in a single season in Europe’s top club competition.
