October 24, (THEWILL) – Rangers kept their Premiership lead with a spirited win over St. Mirren at the SMISA Stadium in Paisley with the pair of Super Eagles’ players Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo playing key roles in the win.
The Steven Gerrard-managed side had to overcome a shaky start, conceding an early goal to Conor Ronan’s stunning strike, but responded from the spot just before the break when Alan Power brought down Hagi just inside the area.
Kemar Roofe then scored his fourth goal of the season with a cool penalty kick. Just moments later, Alfredo Morelos stepped up to score his 100th Rangers goal, a clever header from a James Tavernier cross.
In the second half, St Mirren were unable to put pressure on the visitors’ defence, and manager Jim Goodwin will be disappointed to see central midfielder Jamie McGrath stretchered off in the final ten minutes.
The champions were able to gain more control, and thanks to long periods of possession, they made sure to comfortably finish a difficult game with their lead in tact.
Rangers now have some breathing room at the top of the table, with 23 points and a three-point lead over Hearts, ahead of Aberdeen’s visit to Ibrox on Wednesday.
St Mirren remain in seventh place before travelling to Fir Park in midweek to face mid-table rivals Motherwell.
