November 24, (THEWILL) – Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford, will serve a one-match UEFA Champions League suspension, following his red card against FC Copenhagen, ruling him out of next week’s fixture away to Galatasaray.
The 26-year-old was initially feared to be facing a lengthier ban but UEFA decided against adding an extra one-match suspension to the automatic penalty for his challenge on Elias Jelert. Rashford was dismissed in the 30th minute for a tackle from behind, with United leading 2-0 at the time. Copenhagen dramatically turned the match around to claim a 4-3 victory.
Despite the disappointing result, manager Erik Ten Hag said he saw positives from his team’s performance. However, he believed Rashford’s red card was “very harsh”. The outcome leaves United bottom of their UCL group with one match remaining. They must beat Galatasaray next week to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
In the English Premier League, Ten Hag’s attention now turns to an away trip to Everton on Sunday. A number of key players will be unavailable but Luke Shaw has returned from injury to provide a boost. United are aiming for a third straight league win to consolidate their position in sixth place on 21 points from 12 matches.
