The match ended in a draw, which meant Real missed an opportunity to overtake Barcelona at the top of the league standings. The controversy arose in the 75th minute when Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was challenged by Rayo Vallecano’s Abdul Mumin inside the penalty area. The club felt this incident warranted a penalty, but referee Juan Martinez Munuera did not intervene, nor did VAR official Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes. Real Madrid subsequently released a statement on their official platforms, titled “Controversial refereeing denies Madrid victory,” highlighting their dissatisfaction with the officiating.
According to Real Madrid’s match report, “In the 75th minute came the most controversial play of the match. Vini Jr. was clearly brought down inside the area by Mumin, but Martinez Munuera did not award a penalty, neither was there any warning from Gonzalez Fuertes, the VAR referee.”
Manager Carlo Ancelotti, speaking post-match, agreed with the club’s assessment. He stated: “Seeing a replay, the penalty looked very clear to me.” The frustration was compounded when Vinicius Junior received a booking for his protests, resulting in him being suspended for Madrid’s next league game.
With La Liga title race heating up, Real Madrid now find themselves anxiously awaiting the result of Barcelona’s match against Leganes. A victory for Barcelona would extend their lead to four points, although they would have played an additional game. This situation puts Real Madrid under pressure in their defence of the title even as they prepare for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, where they will meet Mexican side Pachuca on December 18.
