February 02, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid tightened their grip at the top of La Liga on Thursday, by defeating Getafe 2-0 away from home, inflicting just the second home defeat on the hosts in their last 14 league matches.
Los Blancos looked comfortable in the early stages and took the lead midway through the first half when Lucas Vazquez provided an accurate cross for striker Joselu to head home. They continued to threaten before the break with Joselu going close again.
Getafe came out re-energised after halftime and posed an increased danger, with Mason Greenwood striking the post soon after the restart. However, the visitors doubled their advantage just past the hour mark when Vinicius assisted Joselu for his second goal of the evening.
The hosts did not give up though, piling late pressure on the Madrid defence in an attempt to get back into the contest. Substitute Borja Mayoral also struck the woodwork, but Real held firm to seal a vital three points in the title race.
The win, their eighth straight on the road in La Liga, moves Carlo Ancelotti’s side two points clear at the summit as they close in on a 36th Spanish title. For Getafe, however, hopes of European qualification are fading fast.
