June 03, (THEWILL) –Â Real Madrid has ordered an investigation into the security issues that occurred during the UEFA Champions League final, which, according to them, rendered their fans “helpless and defenceless.”
THEWILL recalls that controversies have trailed the experiences of both fans of Real and Liverpool, who had considerable challenges accessing the Stade de France for this year’s showpiece UCL final.
The French police and UEFA have been slammed for their handling of the situation, with videos circulating on social media showing the latter using pepper spray on young Liverpool fans. Real supporters were also treated badly, and the club issued a statement demanding answers as to why the final was so poorly organised.
Real said “many of the fans were violently assaulted, harassed, robbed” and claimed that some ended up “in the hospital for injuries received.” The club statement finished by insisting: “Our followers and fans deserve a response and that the relevant responsibilities be cleared up so that situations like the ones experienced are eradicated forever from football and sport.”
UEFA has confirmed that the events of the final will be subject to a “independent report”, and the deputy mayor of Paris has already apologised to Liverpool fans for the problems they encountered, as THEWILL previously reported.
