May 11, (THEWILL)- Real Madrid showed no signs of complacency after clinching the La Liga title, delivering a ruthless 4-0 dismantling of relegated Granada, on Saturday. Carlo Ancelotti’s men extended their remarkable winning streak against Granada to 16 consecutive matches across all competitions.
While Granada had the initial impetus after Mallorca’s results earlier condemned them to relegation, the champions gradually took control. Fran Garcia opened the scoring by smashing home from close range after Arda Guler squandered a golden chance. Guler then made amends by slotting in Garcia’s cut-back to make it 2-0 before half-time.
Any hopes of an unlikely Granada comeback were extinguished within five second-half minutes. Brahim Diaz scored twice in quick succession, first side-footing home clinically before dancing through the defence and finishing emphatically after a neat one-two with Luka Modric.
The 4-0 scoreline owed much to Real’s relentless attacking quality, but also highlighted Granada’s dismal defending as their season fizzled out miserably. Ancelotti’s side registered their third consecutive away clean sheet with minimal fuss.
With momentum firmly on their side, Real can now fully focus on the UEFA Champions League final as they aim to add more silverware to an already outstanding campaign. Granada, meanwhile, must regroup ahead of life in the Segunda División next season.
