May 08, (THEWILL) – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen showcased his racing prowess at the Miami Grand Prix, as he staged an impressive comeback from ninth place on the grid to secure a remarkable victory.
This triumph marks his third win of the season and extends his lead in the driver’s championship to 14 points. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, trailed over five seconds behind in second place, while Fernando Alonso secured his fourth podium finish of the season, coming in third.
Perez started the race in pole position, forcing Verstappen to navigate the field to challenge his teammate for the coveted victory on American soil. Employing different one-stop strategies, Perez opted for the medium tires, while Verstappen went with the longer-lasting hards, proving to be the superior choice overall in terms of racing performance.
Within just 15 laps, Verstappen utilised the pace of his Red Bull car to surge into second place, overtaking Alonso. Five laps later, with Perez trailing less than two seconds behind him, Perez made his sole pit stop, setting the stage for a strategic battle between the two drivers. Verstappen extended his stint on the hard tires until Lap 45, rejoining the track less than two seconds adrift of Perez with a little over ten laps remaining.
Taking advantage of Perez’s worn tires, Verstappen executed a race-winning manoeuvre on Lap 48, deftly overtaking on the outside into Turn One and maintaining his lead until the checkered flag. With a comfortable 5.3-second margin over Perez, Verstappen sealed a commanding victory, capping off a sensational drive.
