Remo Stars, Rivers United

August 22, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) commenced its 2025/2026 season on Friday, with a competitive 1-1 draw between defending champions, Remo Stars, and former champions, Rivers United, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Remo Stars, temporarily relocated from their Ikenne base due to ongoing renovations, faced a stern test from a disciplined Rivers United side.

The match, a highly anticipated clash between two NPFL powerhouses, set an intense tone for the new campaign. Both teams, representing Nigeria in the this season’s CAF Champions League, showed tactical discipline and attacking intent from kickoff. Rivers United struck first, with Aniekeme Okon scoring against his former club in the third minute. The winger headed in a precise cross from Timothy Zechariah, stunning the home crowd.

Remo Stars responded swiftly, equalising in the ninth minute through Victor Mbaoma, who marked his return to the club with a clinical finish from Samuel Anakwe’s through ball. Mbaoma’s goal, his 16th for Remo Stars and 52nd in the NPFL, underlined his importance to the champions. However, the forward’s night ended prematurely due to an injury in the 21st minute, with Malian signing Adama Goita replacing him.

The second half saw both teams create chances but fail to convert. Remo Stars pressed for a winner, with Anakwe striking the crossbar and goalkeeper Victor Sochima making a vital save for Rivers United. The visitors nearly regained the lead when Michael Ibe’s free-kick hit the woodwork. Despite their resilience, Rivers United finished the match with 10 players after Temple Emekayi received a red card in stoppage time for dangerous play.

The draw extended Remo Stars’ unbeaten home record in the NPFL to 52 matches, dating back to May 2022, while Rivers United maintained their 12-year unbeaten streak in season openers. The strength of both squads was in full display, with new signings like Goita for Remo Stars and Isaac Annor for Rivers United showing promise for the season ahead. The result sets the stage for a competitive NPFL season. Remo Stars are aiming to defend their title while Rivers United targeting their second championship.
