June 20, (THEWILL) – After being released by Ligue 1 club, Monaco, earlier this month, former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, is considering retirement.
The Spaniard’s three-and-a-half years in the Principality have come to an end, and retirement from the game remains a strong possibility. And his recent injury woes have caused him to consider whether now is the best moment to hang up his boots.
During his 20th season in the professional game, Fabregas made just five appearances for Monaco in all competitions.
In 2003, in a League Cup match against Rotherham United, Fabregas made his senior debut for Arsenal at the age of 16 years and 177 days, becoming the Gunners’ youngest ever player.
Before returning to his boyhood club Barcelona, Fabregas spent eight years in north London, three of them as captain of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. However, he struggled to get into a Barcelona team that already had Xavi and Andres Iniesta, and in 2014 he returned to England to join Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea.
Fabregas left Stamford Bridge midway through the 2018/2019 season after falling out of favour with Maurizio Sarri, bringing an end to a successful four-and-a-half year stay. Fabregas earned 110 appearances for Spain at the international level, and was a member of the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, and Euro 2012 winning lineups.
