April 22, (THEWILL) — The Rivers State Police Command has dissolved its tactical teams and merged them into a newly created unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency and professionalism.
The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, who disclosed this on Wednesday to journalists in Port Harcourt, said the move followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
Agabe explained that the disbanded tactical teams have now been consolidated under the VCRU, which is tasked with responding to incidents of violent crime across the state.
“The VCRU is mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to incidents of violent crime, while adhering to established rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights”, she said.
She added that the restructuring is to strengthen operational coordination within the Command and improve public confidence in policing.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, warned officers against extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct.
“Any violation of the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct will attract disciplinary action”, Adepoju stated.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, urging residents to cooperate with the police and report suspicious activities or unprofessional conduct by officers.
The Commissioner also reiterated the Command’s resolve to promote effective, accountable, and people-centred policing across Rivers State.
