June 09, (THEWILL) – Rivers United, defending champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League, put an end to Bendel Insurance’s impressive 26-game unbeaten streak, prevailing with a 2-1 victory during a high-stakes Super Six clash on Friday.
Bendel Insurance, hailing from Benin, had entered the game with the longest unbeaten run (21) in the NPFL. Just days prior, they had held the formidable Enyimba to a 1-1 draw. Determined to extend their remarkable streak, the team, often referred to as the Benin Arsenal, however, faced a setback in their fifth match of the NPFL Super Six at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
This defeat marked a significant blow for Bendel Insurance, who had showcased their resilience throughout the league but were unable to sustain their momentum against a more formidable opponent in the Rivers United side. In the abridged format of the 2022/2023 season, the defending champions topped Group B and did not play against Group A leaders and unbeaten side, Insurance, until the Super Six.
The match was a fierce battle, with both teams applying skills and fuelled by a determination to finish with victory. Rivers United’s win not only halted the unbeaten run of Insurance but also demonstrated their own prowess as they outplayed Insurance.
